Puente Poetry: The Best of Neighbours

two whippets sniffing the tidal sand as the lagoon fills with water
two whippets on the beach by a wooden post above the tidal lagoon

the seagulls from our roof
feed in the lace the waves push in,
heavy with crab for growing chicks
who will soon be the size of their parents

~ our quirky friends ~

now the best of neighbours
with tilted head and knowing blink
we head for home as the sand disappears
in a hungry sea that swallows every bar

  1. I’ve heard that seagull scribes have etched with their beaks onto crab shells, a copy of these poems. When seagulls read, they have a weird laugh, and during their sky ballet and mating dance they talk about lace, crabs, and chicks, and they cry when the tide washes out. I’ve heard that the seagulls all like your poems. They like to observe whippets too.
