Haibun: The Way Home

It is safe to return to the woods now the storms have passed and it takes a while to find our bearings. Where once was a path, the ground is covered with fallen branches. Where, until recently, trees stood filled with squirrels and birdsong, we discover wide open spaces filled with light. The usual landmarks where we would turn right and right again have disappeared and we fall back on an ancient, inner compass.

deep forest
each journey still rooted
in the soil

  1. Beautiful images, Xenia. Eivor looks so wise, and Pearl appears so inquisitive. Those conifer needles are a gorgeous shade of soft green. And the haiku! Such peaceful thoughts it provokes! Glad to know you all weathered the storm safely. The skies are grey and threatening here at the moment, but we desperately need snow. Thanks as always for sharing your world with us. It’s a dose of harmony and serenity that’s much needed nowadays. Please give pats to Eivor and Pearl for me. 🙂

  2. I’m so happy you can return to the woods and you made it safely thru the storms. It is amazing how old paths get covered up and new ones form or need to be discovered. We have that happen here in the local riverbed. It is quite a big area and the storms and vegetation sometimes move the river where it flows and so with the horses you sometimes have to find another path. Miss Chloe can’t ride at the riverbed any more because the sand is deep and it would be too hard on her back leg. But you can get lost down there with the overgrowth and trees. It’s only a mile or so from my house and my stables. Anyways, sorry to go on so but your storms reminded me of the change nature does to local areas! Please give Eivor and Pearl a big pat and hug from Chloe, Murphy and I, they are so sweet! 💞🐾🐴💙🤠❤️

    1. Thank you so much for your kind words dear Diana and Eivor and Pearl say thank you for the pats too! 🐾💛🐾 I can imagine the storms affecting the way a river flows and horses can be very good at finding a new path through the terrain. It must have been so special riding there with Chloe! 💚 We wish you a wonderful week and a fabulous time with your family and please give sweet Chloe and Murphy a big pat from us all 🤗🧡🐴 xxx

  3. I’m glad you stayed safe from the storm, Xenia, but a bit sad about the trees and damage. I hope it wasn’t too severe, that you still have plenty of trees remaining upright. Spring comes in another month and perhaps with it, better weather and plenty of sun. Sending love and hugs from me and The Boy Wonder Cat. 🙂
