Tanka: Deep Water

tanka poem by Xenia Tran with an image of two whippets in winter jackets on tidal sands looking out across the lagoon

letting go
a swan pair shows
their cygnet
how deep water glitters
in sapphire blue

  1. Thank you for sharing your beautiful photos and a short poem. I could see the swan pair gliding on the water when I read your words. I love it when a poem has imagery I can relate to.

    1. Thank you kindly dear Cathy 💗 The swan parents have been escorting the cygnet out to sea to encourage her to leave and she continues to follow them back home to the river. Fingers crossed she’ll soon find the confidence to go it alone and join a flock of other juveniles 💜🙏 xxx

  2. The first things that caught my eye were “sapphire blue” – it immediately evoked an image of a cabouchon sapphire, which sparkles very differently from the same gem cut with facets (my favourite type of my favourite gem); how deep and dark that water must have been.

Then when I reread the poem several times, what struck me was “letting go” and how instinctive that is for the swans, but not for us humans. Something I will ponder on.

    1. Thank you so much for your kind words dear Ju-Lyn and it’s lovely to hear how the sapphire blue of the deep water invoked an image of the cabouchon sapphire 💙 It is instinctive for swan parents to let go of their offspring before they start the reproductive cycle again. This year one of the cygnets isn’t ready to let go of her parents yet and continues to follow them back home to the river. We hope her instincts will take over soon too to give her the courage to spread her wings 💜🙏
