Today we play on the beach against a backdrop from another era. Watch bunkers from World War II sit quietly on the sand while the moon guides the sea. Further along the coast anti-tank blocks and pill boxes are tipping over. Some completely disappear. Coastal erosion is eroding memories too. Friends and families light barbecues among the remains of structures created when the threat of invasion was real.

Hi Xenia. Where is this, then? Bunkers on American shore????
Love your haiku today.

Hi Herb and thank you for your kind words! We are in the north of Scotland and these bunkers can be found along the Moray Firth :o)

Ah, I was wondering what those blocks were! I’d never have guessed anti-tank although I did wonder about them being from the war. Pearl’s looking good ❤ Lovely and very apt haiku too 🙂 Much love xxx

Wonder if those who were defending your country would have ever envisioned the “new life” that is today? It sure is a different world. Today, on our independence day, I am thankful for all those who came before that defended the freedoms that we have today…and often take for granted.

Thank you so much for your kind thoughts. It certainly is a very different world today and I too am very grateful for the freedoms we enjoy now thanks to all those who fought so hard to create these freedoms. We wish you a very happy Independence Day and much love to you and Tippy :o) xxx

Fascinating images Xenia and a bit more on those wartime defences. Amazing how the government simply left them there to mar the landscape. How the concept of war has changed since WW2. Everyone knew whom the enemy was and where they were. Today……………..

Thank you for your kind words Denis and it seems common practice for successive governments to leave these structures in the sand. Back then it certainly was more clear who the enemies were!

I love seeing the pillboxes. We have several of them hidden in our mountains and along the shorelines here in Hawaii. It’s neat to see them in other countries as well! Thanks for sharing!

How fascinating there are similar pillboxes in Hawaii! I just had a look online at some of the trails and they have the most amazing views from those bunkers!☺

You’ll have to follow my hiking posts on “Trekking Thursdays”. Most of the hikes I do include a pillbox!

Xenia, I hope you get this right away. It looks like I might have to blog the poem I wrote from your Haiku – tomorrow, Friday Jly 14/17. The one about this light you see in me…I wrote it for an old friend in England who was feeling down. I hope you don’t mind.

Hi Herb, I did not know that my haiku inspired a poem and this comment from you was waiting at a different post. You are more than welcome to post a copy of my poem as long as you link it to the original post it refers to: https://whippetwisdom.com/2017/07/09/bridge-of-love/
