scrambling through the gorge
we follow the stream and sound
of falling water, famed
in myth and legend

stretching to eavesdrop
on voices that greet us
rising from the rocks with
their smiling, fleeting faces

Haibun: Mist Rising

a blue and white whippet in a black jacket on a forest trail

We’ve had some heavy rain the last few days. The weather was wild in the North with gale force winds, flinging our last apples from the tree. We’ll leave these for the hedgehogs, the visiting birds.

Haibun: This World We Sail In

Glen Affric

a blue and white whippet in a black jacket climbing a hill on a forest trail

There are so many ways to climb the hill. Stone steps are here for those who stride big, who like something solid underfoot. I prefer to take smaller steps, feel the soil between my toes, the earth’s heartbeat.

this forest speaks of growing
your own star

We pause to read messages left here by the deer, hear the swish of dippers’ wings above the flowing waters. It’s in the silence, where we hear our guidance speak.

this world we sail in
the water on the outside
spurs the dream

Haibun: A View from Above

Glen Affric

a black whippet in a black jacket walking on a forest trail with spring grass and heather

The trail climbs between birch and Douglas fir. Protected from the breeze it carries us higher and higher. We hear water gushing below, the sound of insects humming.

We stop to sniff the grass. Our companion finds the courage to walk onto a wooden platform and gaze over the cascading falls of Abhainn Deabhag.
