Meeting Misty

A warm-hearted thank you to all of you who showed so much kindness and love after the loss of our beloved Eivor and Pearl last month. Your prayers, healing, comments, messages and cards have wrapped us in a warm blanket of comfort, love and light.

We had no intention of fostering or adopting another dog so soon until angels both in heaven and on earth brought Misty into our lives. She was the much-loved only dog of an elderly couple, who have cared for her since she was a pup. The woman passed away six years ago and her widower passed away recently.

Misty is used to a quiet life and needs to be the only pet in the house. Her family are great animal lovers with a house full of pets and a lively toddler.

They contacted rehoming charity Give a Greyhound a Home and asked if they could find a Forever Foster Home for Misty. Misty is on medication for life for one health condition and on a special diet for another. She is receiving supplements for a third condition and a fourth condition is currently not life-threatening, though needs to be monitored.

The family visited us with Misty the day before we were leaving for a short break. In the midst of all our grief, Misty moved between us with love, kindness and grace and we felt the possibilities for healing.

There were tears. Above all, there was love. They left Misty in our care with her food and medication, her beds and blankets and a warm red coat.

Here a new journey begins. We feel grateful and blessed to be able to care for this sweet soul in her twilight years and remain in close contact with her family.

Our walks are shorter and quieter, giving us special times together with all the beauty and magic that nature has to offer.

We will post here on Mondays and Thursdays, and continue to post on our sister blog Tranature on Wednesdays.

  6. Xenia, it’s amazing how life heals and works. I’m so glad for Misty and you and your husband. It’s not everyone who will take an older dog with health issues. She will give you all the love she has and you will give her yours. I’ve got tears in my eyes writing this. Luck and love to all of you.

      1. There was an article online yesterday about some ‘movie star’ who had always wanted a puppy, but instead saw an older dog and adopted him. Said it is the best thing he has ever done. He posted a photo of him driving and the dog is resting his chin on his shoulder. Sweetest photo and such a great shoutout to older dogs.

  7. What a treasure Misty will be. I didn’t know you had lost both Eivor & Pearl recently. It is hard to go on without our wonderful companions, yet we do. Having another dog who needs your tender care will help in your healing process. I still miss my sweet Jello, yet Max and Daisy fill me with joy daily 🐾

  13. All it took was one look at Misty and it was obvious she is a beautiful soul. It’s so strange the way things happen sometimes, but in the end, love seems to attract those who need it most, hence Misty’s path and yours crossing now. I’m so happy for both of you. I would like to say “Hello” to Misty and I would be honored if you could give her a gentle pat for me. This is beautiful all round. Thank you for caring for this wonderful girl, Xenia.   17. I often tell my clients that you cannot pre-determine when your next dog will arrive. You will simply know. Misty was brought into your lives because you are great dog parents and have the experience that she needs. Congratulations on your new addition. I look forward to more posts!

    1. I pushed send too soon — her name. Long long long long ago my mom dog sat a geriatric miniature poodle named Misty. That dog was fearless and a character. When her “real” human came to get her, she wouldn’t go with her. She wanted to stay with my mom. She was one of greatest dogs and I am 100% sure my mom’s life was better with Misty in it. Consequently, I have a soft spot for dogs with that name and this one? What a beauty, what a sweet face, and what a lovely story.

As one door closes another will open and as your heart is healing how wonderful this gentle soul is there as she needs your help in her older years.   44. I nearly cried with your message this morning for we lost our first two dogs 12 weeks apart . Lizzie and Tess were rescue sisters we had at 2 years old born 2000 . They were lab x collie . Inseparable and loyal . Lizzie succumbed to an inoperable tumour at 13 and Tess -out of the blues- swallowed vetinary plastic on the neighbours farm 12 weeks later . She had mourned for three months . So that’s why we got Blue the cocker some months later and Pepper a year last May . Glad you have Misty now x
