Haibun: Sometimes the Wind

The wind has changed direction and it’s best to stay at home. It’s blowing straight from the Arctic and, just for a short while, we get a sense of life in another place, far away from here. A place where the sun rarely sets in Summer and barely rises in Winter. A place with polar bears, reindeer and huskies. A place similar to what it was like here, thousands and thousands of years ago.

  1. When we get those arctic winds we refer to it as a “polar vortex”. We have not had that now and our temperatures are actually above average. I was able to ride in the outdoor arena today. Glorious day! Pearl and Eivor look warm in their coats . You stay warm too!

    1. Thank you so much for your kind words dear Anne and great to hear you were able to ride in the outdoor arena! 🌞 We will be taking it easy for the next few days and only walk in sheltered places. Our beaches face North and we get the full force of 70 mph gusts with a -10C windchill ❄ Here’s wishing you a blessed week ahead and please give sweet Biasini a big pat from us all 🤗💖🐴 xxx

  2. The thing about your posts of Eivor and Pearl is how strongly they give visually weight to the importance of the affection between two animals. Honestly, after reading your posts through the years if I were able to have a dog I would absolutely go for two rather than one. Good for you for recognizing this early on Xenia.

    1. Thank you so much for your kind words dear Tina 💗 Most dogs and hounds especially love living in a pack and it’s as natural for them as it is for wolves who live in the wild. Eivor and Pearl connected the moment they met and it’s lovely to see the bond between them 🐾💛🐾

  3. My bride and I have only been as far north as Edinburgh. If we make our bucket list trip to Ireland in the next few years, maybe we can stop in at Fraserburgh or even Wick! We loved the highlands (if that’s what Scots call such low country as Edinburgh?), and exploring the more rural north would be a wonderful adventure, especially close to this time of year or in late October, when the winds would be cold and the rum warm. 😉

    1. Thank you so much for your kind words and we hope you’ll make it to Ireland, a country close to our heart 🍀 The Highlands are often quieter in Spring and Autumn with fewer midges too, so that would be a good time to visit. Glad to hear you enjoyed your time in Edinburgh too! 😊
