Haibun: We Romantics

Today is the last day of our lockdown. More than a hundred days of staying at home. In many ways, it’s been a true blessing.

We enjoy the quiet beach, the clean air and water, the way we always do. More than anything, we enjoy the absence of litter. The romantic in me hopes it can stay this way, that tourists will be mindful when they return.

  1. After 100 days it will be interesting to see what you notice as you return to public spaces. Less litter is wonderful. I have noticed how much clearer the air is with less traffic. I hope this will be a powerful time of reflection for all. Stay safe and be well.

  5. Your photos are so beautiful. Here, the lockdown and the subsequent steps to reopening put people out in nature who would never go there in normal circumstances. It’s caused a lot of problems for animals and the parks services. Maybe “How to walk on a mountain path” should be taught in schools.

  6. Beautiful as always. Can’t blame you for hoping people don’t litter. (What’s the chance?) The whole pandemic thing is going very poorly here in the United States. Hats off to your country for doing a better job. We don’t expect to see our children until a vaccine comes out. Whenever that is. Sigh.

  9. Oh, my experience was so similar to yours. Once things opened up and tourists returned, it was time to head back from our beach condominium to our home in Vancouver. Those three months walking a quiet, clean beach spoiled me!

  11. It’s the one thing I was amazed at – during lockdown – how quickly nature moved back in where people used to be, the cleaner air, no litter, penguins in the streets of Cape Town and everywhere else. I mourn the end of lockdown. Humans will not stand back for nature. Loved your haibun.

      2. I see where you’re coming from and history wouldn’t fill me with as much hope as the present and future. We have some great environmental initiatives here which are gaining real momentum. Kids and young people are getting involved too, which is great to see 💚

  13. The lockdown has been great for me and Keith – an opportunity to help him gradually get used to meeting other dogs on walks. I’m hopeful that he’ll be able to handle it when the lockdown is lifted and the hordes descend! ❤ ❤ xxx

  16. There have been some advantages to quarantine, like less litter, less pollution, more eating healthy foods at home. Enjoy your new freedom. Here in the US we still need to stay put – except for walking in the park.
