Haibun: Nature’s Spirit

We’re walking through the forest at Easter, the sun is bright and warm. It’s the warmest Easter we’ve known since moving to the Highlands. Eivor walks beside us, touching my hand with his nose to let us know. To let us know, how good it feels to be here.

Pearl walks slightly ahead of us, sniffing the bark of a pine, touching a twig or leaf. Prints from paw and foot weave on behind us. Our eyes follow the movements between the trees across the water, where pairs of geese go quietly.

  14. Beautiful photos and words. I love the idea that Eivor touches your hand as you are walking to let you know how good it is to be in a place of beauty and springtime. Our animals do let us know sometimes don’t they!

  19. Such a sweet Easter stroll. I do so adore your walkabouts with camera and dogs. How fortunate you are to live near the highlands; WA state’s deep forests and tall mountains are as close I can get to pristine perfection.

  26. Your photography and poems are always so restful, Xenia. I love the description of prints from paw and foot weaving together – it says so much about your relationship with Peal and Eivor – and the phrase ‘stars flicker through the temple of this world’ – that’s so beautiful!

  27. Xenia, your photos are poetic, in capturing the true beauty, of the world around you, as your words compliment them. Wish, I could say that southern Ontario has been, as warm as your Scottish Highlands, but, we were able to avoid that dread last snowfall of April.
