Haibun: Waiting for Rain

In early June clouds float across Lochan Deo, the water slightly receding after an un-seasonable warm week. Today, clouds only float in sky. The loch is dry, earth lies parched between stones, curved driftwood.

Lochan Deo in August without water

The top photograph was taken at the beginning of June (at the start of the heatwave) and the second photograph was taken last week. We have had a little rain since and are hoping for more.

  1. Happy you got rain as well! Here we have had quite good raining and the grass is recovering. However many animals have died. Found a totally dried out little hedgehog a couple of weeks ago. Could not save him, he was too far gone.

    1. Thank you Ann-Christine, glad to hear you have had good raining! So sorry to hear about the animals and the poor wee hedgehog. We have been putting water bowls in the garden for the birds and passing wildlife and I understand it is difficult to help all the animals that roam in more remote areas – I think everyone is doing the best they can xxx

  7. Oh my goodness! What a difference between June and now! But the grass is still green. I can just imagine the wonderful scents of pine and heather when the rain does start to fall, breathing their sighs of relief.

    1. Thank you Jane, we have had a few extremes this year, from the Siberian winds to the long Summer heatwave – we may never fully understand the causes with our limited human knowledge ;o) xxx

  10. That’s quite a beautiful haiku — it captures the image and the sense of the season very well. And the accompanying prose is well done too. “curved driftwood”, as an addition to the last line works so well.

  11. what arresting images – incredible – but then, extreme is the “new normal” – and we shall continue to pay these incredible prices for it;

  12. This is written with such a loving touch. I love the line the “earth lies parched between stones, curved driftwood. still waiting” so compassionate and clear. And the photographs are shocking.

  22. It looks like a very peaceful place. I appreciate seeing two photos from different times, but at the same place. It’s interesting to see how nature changes through the year, or even between only a few months.
