Tanka Prose: Before the Daffodils

Some friends believe our world began in the wrong house, locked in a life with people who thought that love alone would be enough. We can see a shadow in their eyes when they realise our beginnings.

happiness
now is all that matters
the past is cast
our scars fade with time
before the daffodils

Carpe Diem #1405: New Life (“extreme haibun”)

Kristjaan at Carpe Diem invites us to write an ‘extreme haibun’, a haibun in no more than 55 words (including the haiku) about ‘New Life’. I have challenged myself to write this as tanka prose (a paragraph of prose followed by a tanka).

  1. Lovely haibun Xenia. I once did one for the Quadrille prompt – 44 words. I can’t believe I did it – so hard. your 55 words are glorious. the prose tanka at the end is haunting and lovely. I am not posting here today but over at Real Toads. Take care of you and the pups. Hugs and love to all three of you.

    1. Thank you so much for your kind words Toni. I have done a couple of haibun for the Quadrille prompt too and it always felt too short for me – 55 words suits me better! Happy writing at Real Toads and much love back to you from all of us here :o) xxx

  2. Tanka prose beautifully done. Scars of the past — winter’s pock marks on roads and downed trees from ice….scars of our past we try to bury rather than work to put salve on them and soften them. And ah yes….the daffodils. We are just back from Bermuda yesterday — and unbelievably had turbulence, went down to 3,000 feet and then the plane shot up…pilot came on and said the weather in Boston had deteriorated, we were in a holding pattern and may have to divert to JFK, all the while turbulence…I was white knuckling it on my seat arms. We finally landed in the midst of swirling snow! What a rude reentry to the fickleness of spring in New England. So yes — bring on the daffodils! I’m going to the store tomorrow to get some from the florist section and put a vase of them in every room!!! Loved your post!

    1. Thank you so much for your kind words Lillian and welcome back to Boston – so glad you all landed safely after such a white knuckle flight! I love the idea of you placing daffodils in a vase in every room – it sets a beautiful intent for Spring ☺💖 xxx
