Haibun: Remembrance Day

black whippet in winter coat walking in the dunes

The beach is filled with stones and waves. I can taste the salty air. The dunes protect us from the North Winds, catch the morning rays. This freedom we enjoy, others gave their lives for.

  1. For our King and our country,
    And the promise of glory,
We came from Kingston and Brighton
To fight on the front lines.

    Just lads from the farm,
    And boys from the city.
    Not meant to be soldiers
    Who lay in the trenches.

We’d face the fighting with a smile,
    Or so we said.
If only we had known what dangers lay ahead.

    One day soon.
    I don’t know when.
    We’ll all be free,
And the bells of peace will ring again.

    The time will come,
    For you and me.
    We’ll be going home
When this bloody war is ended.

    We’ll lay down our weapons.
    On Remembrance Day.
    There’ll be no more fighting.
    On Remembrance Day.

And the guns will be silenced.
    On Remembrance Day.
    We’ll all say a prayer.
    On Remembrance Day.

    1. Thank you Denis, along our coast you can see many old fishermen’s cottages in narrow streets without cars. Most of them are around 200 years old and built close together to protect each other from the wind.
