Near the forest of Inshriach lies a trail of sculptures made from fallen caledonian pine. Frank Bruce was a self-taught artist who wanted his art to be accessible to all. The state of decay is intentional. He wanted his sculptures to naturally return to the earth from which they came.

As a child Frank preferred to be outside rather than be stuck at school. He was more interested in the beauty and wisdom of nature. He has left us a gift that leaves a lasting impression, even though the lifespan of his art is temporary. In this peaceful natural setting some of his sculptures ask deep questions which are timeless.

  22. These carvings are so inspiring. We had an elm in our back yard die and within a year the elm next to it died as well. (I always thought of them as siblings.) So instead of just cutting them down, we hired a lovely man, Emile, to carve them into two great blue herons. They stand outside my writing window looking into the future.

    Thank you for this lovely post. I absolutely love the carvings.

  28. Love the sculptures. They did something similar in Biloxi, Mississippi after Hurricane Katrina hit a few years back. Since it is along the Gulf Of Mexico, most of the sculptures there are sea related. They are beautiful.

  36. I guess I am #80..wow, your entourage is impressive. OMG, I love the photos; just dreaming of such a place, where Art finds its true form, as broken trees morph into natural aesthetics. Bravo for sharing two poems in one–though a modern haibun can have multiple haiku & paragraphs (at least mine do)

  39. What a wonderful place to visit and a fantastic concept. Scotland is full of creativity that not many people outside know about. As you know, I love trees and forests, and The Frank Bruce Sculpture Trail really appeals to me. And you’ve done it justice with your gorgeous photographs and haibun, Xenia!
    I love the idea of the sculptures returning to the earth naturally and that they are trees are thoughtful – I know the ones in our garden are 😉

    PS: I have always wondered when I see your photo up top, how many dogs do you have and how old are they? They are so exhuberant and always make me smile when I open your blog!

    1. Thank you Lillian, Frank Bruce’s work is amazing. He left school aged 13 and was so natural in everything he did, so very wise too :o) Today we have our rescue whippets Eivor (aged seven) and Pearl (aged six) – our older dogs Seamus and Ruby who featured in earlier blog posts are now on the other side of the rainbow. Whippets are highly energetic – they love to run and enjoy themselves :o) xxx
