It is still cold in the mountains and new life begins to show within the tree line. The scent of pine is so fresh in the breeze and promises a new beginning. Up here we walk for miles without meeting a soul. Yet we never feel alone. The capercaillie’s mating call echoes in the distance. We feel the mountain’s heartbeat, the love from the old wise trees.

How wonderful to hear a capercaillie! and not to hear people! How I love the Highlands and Islands of my home country. Time I came up again for a visit soon ….once the snow has gone.

Thank you Helen, yes it is a wonderful sound! After a few mild days we are back to sleet and snow and this will pass again by the weekend. If your trip to the Highlands takes you near Inverness when we are around and you fancy meeting up for a coffee feel free to drop me an email ☺

Beautiful photos and haiku, its a pity about the snow still around Xenia, those coats have to stay out of the cupboard..

I had to google capercaille to see what it was… I have never seen one close, but I understand that they can be a bit crazy and even attack you at this time of year…

The male birds get very territorial at the start of the mating season and tend to fight eachother. We have never seen them attacking anyone else :o)

I just saw this clip and the man was agitating the bird and walking right up to his nest. We always stick to the paths and trails during the nesting season and do not walk through the heather where the birds have made their home.

I don’t feel alone when I’m walking alone either. Reality is all around me. There is a lot of green in that photo with all those evergreens in the background and Eivor’s green jacket.
