Haibun: Forest Splendour

lr-1040742-ww

Snow still sleeps in the shadows of the glen. Fallen trees block our usual path and invite us to explore the unexplored. Here deer glide effortlessly through the forest. In this moment our connection with the soil, with the old pines and with new growth comes alive. An ancient compass deep inside begins to guide us. We trust these instincts and become one with the forest. We know the wolf inside our heart is home.

      1. Oh no! I hope there were both OK afterwards. Eivor tends to read other dogs quite well and will avoid a confrontation. Pearl has a lot to say when she does not like the way another dog approaches and they seem to respect her wishes ☺

      2. They were both on leads to begin with while I and the wolf dog’s owner had a chat, but the wolf dog wouldn’t leave Finbar alone so I let him loose. He wouldn’t move from my side though and the wolf dog went for him anyway, grabbed him by the throat. No self-respecting dog will let that pass. The other dog’s owner couldn’t control him, he was just too strong and he was dragged into the fight. No one was hurt thankfully but it was painfully obvious that an unneutered dominant male dog of that kind of temperament and power, is going to be big problems.

      3. It is so important to be able to read the body language in those moments and it sounds as if the dog felt threatened by Finbar’s presence whilst he was on the lead and even more so once Finbar was off the lead. ‘On Talking Terms with Dogs: Calming Signals’ by Turid Rugaas is a great guide on reading the signals in encounters with other dogs and if you have not read it yet I can highly recommend it ☺

      4. He was being threatening when they were both on leads which is why I let Finbar go. That was possibly a mistake—I shouldn’t have stopped to talk. I know dogs react differently when one is tied up and the other not, but I think in this particular case, it was just a very dominant dog that wanted to throw his weight about. If they’d both been off lead he’d have eaten Finbar alive.

  1. You know, it is hard enough for each of us, spending time in the deep woods, not to give into the primordial urges the forest teases & cajoles, but you help me to see how house cats can go feral & domesticated dogs can run in packs hunting, we are all skin-deep away from the inner savage.

    1. Thank you Glenn, it never ceases to amaze me how dogs have adapted to domestic life and it is lovely to see them so at home in natural surroundings guided by their instincts ☺

  2. I really like your haibun and how talk of the heart of the wolf in your dogs. I have sometimes looked at your photos and thought that your dogs sometimes look like wolves.
