Haibun: A Message From The Stars

black whippet with a green ball in his mouth on tidal sands

A small boy in an Everton shirt waves his arms like wings, shimmies down the dunes and kicks a ball across the tidal sands. A huge smile lights up his face. He can move freely now and breathes in the fresh air. It is a different world from when he was in his hospital bed. Some of the players came to visit him, preparing him for what he had always dreamt of. To walk on to the pitch of his favourite team as their mascot.

The day eventually came. The crowd roared. He and his twin sister walked on to the pitch. She carried the ball because he was too weak. She passed the ball to the referee. The team captains shook their hands, put their arms around them for a photograph. They waved the players good luck, waved at the crowd and watched their heroes beat Manchester United 3-1. It was an amazing day. A day he would never forget. He fell asleep with a big smile on his face, taking the memories of his biggest day with him on his next journey.

This post is dedicated to the memory of our nephew Jamie Baker (1977-1986) who died of leukaemia hours after appearing as a mascot for Everton Football Club.

Sijo: On The Shore

Two whippets playing between seaweed covered rocks at low tide

the tide sweeps out once more, leaves seaweeds resting in airs of Spring
among the joys of shell and stones, playful dogs and soaring gulls
it takes a while before the poem plucks me from the mountains

Kristjaan at Carpe Diem invites us to write a Sijo:

More ancient than haiku, the Korean Sijo shares a common ancestry with haiku, tanka and similar Japanese genres. All evolved from more ancient Chinese patterns. Sijo is traditionally composed in three lines of 14-16 syllables each, totalling between 44-46 syllables. A pause breaks each line approximately in the middle. The sijo may be narrative or thematic, introducing a situation or problem in line 1, development or “turn” in line 2, and resolution in line 3. The first half of the final line employs a “twist”: a surprise of meaning, sound, tone or other device. The sijo is often more lyrical, subjective and personal than haiku, and the final line can take a profound, witty, humorous or proverbial turn. Like haiku, sijo has a strong basis in nature.

Weekly Photo Challenge: It Is Easy Being Green

black whippet in green coat on snowy mountain trail

It is still cold in the mountains and new life begins to show within the tree line. The scent of pine is so fresh in the breeze and promises a new beginning. Up here we walk for miles without meeting a soul. Yet we never feel alone. The capercaillie’s mating call echoes in the distance. We feel the mountain’s heartbeat, the love from the old wise trees.
