Haibun: November Moon

A photographer steadies his tripod on the sand as the crowd swells to watch the super moon rise. The sky is heavy with cloud and the only light on the horizon is the green flicker from the East pier. We are bathed in a warm glow while we recognise old friends and catch up on our stories. “The last time the moon was this close to earth was the year I was born,” says Tom, “but I do not remember seeing it!” We have a good laugh and my mind travels back to a time before I could talk or walk. I am lying in my cot under the skylight in my grandparents’ flat. The moon glides into view like a long forgotten friend and I kick my blanket while waving my arms with joy.

Tonight I lift the curtain to watch the clouds part just before bed time. The moon is pulsating inside a gold and indigo halo, her light reflected in our neighbour’s skylight.

  20. Love the way you set up the scene of anticipation and fellowship, sharing a moment of moon history.
    I especially like the description here..”The moon is pulsating inside a gold and indigo halo, her light reflected in our neighbour’s skylight.” It’s so interesting to see a range of different photos of the Supermoon from all over the world. Yours is very mysterious. 🙂

    1. Thank you for your kind words Mish :o) We were talking for over an hour before heading back home as the cloud cover was too thick for us to see the moon rise. When it broke through the clouds much later that night it looked very mystical. I have seen some amazing images from other parts of the world and it is so wonderful that we are all looking at the same moon and see a different side of her :o)
