Extraordinary Days

In our dog’s eyes every day is a special day. They watch in awe as milk and oats blend into porridge on the stove. Wet noses touch my hand when I fill their bowls with the promise of walks and ball games. They bring toys when I put on my boots, lick my face as I tie the lace. I lift their leads from the hook by the door while they pogo-bounce in the hallway. When we walk through the gate new adventures await.

until his echo fades
a memory

  9. What a couple of cuties! I could feel the energy throughout this, and the unconditional adoration only our dogs can give. Love “pogo-bounce” – perfect. And I like the juxtaposition your haiku lends.

    1. Thank you for your kind words Paul and yes, their honoring of every moment is highly infectious and we are so grateful for that. Adopting them from the shelter has been so rewarding. It is wonderful to see them happy and be who they were meant to be.

  16. Xenia, this is wonderful! My daughter called me today while she was walking her dogs and your haibun reminded me what a joy it is to be out and about with the humans and dogs you love. I agree that in our dogs’ eyes every day is a special day. I even started to imagine you all having adventures, especially after reading your haiku, with the stag roaring in the mountain!

    1. Thank you Kim, it is such a joy each day and I am sure your daughter will experience that too. Even when walking in the same places the light is always different, you see different wildlife and the stags have just started the rut here which makes for a completely different adventure!   18. We could learn a lot from our animal friends who seem to be in perpetual happy moods with little worries. Your haibun reminded me of the Sheltie we had years ago…he sure loved his walks!
