Pause Here On Your Journey

 

We are walking through the glen of a thousand whispers and the leaves rustle in the breeze. Their colours have begun the change and the rains have filled the loch.

I love the smells of Autumn, the smells of the here and now.

We live in the moment, always. We have been teaching our companions to do the same and they like to follow our example.

After climbing for a while we reach a clearing where we can see over Loch Beinn a’Mheadhoin.

Forestry Commission Scotland have placed a piece of bark here where they have carved the names of the mountains in view and the following words:

‘Pause here on your journey, don’t stir and you’ll see – an entire landscape in the bark of a tree.’

Here in the Adirondack Mountains of New York State (northeastern United States) there is a scenic overlook, from which you can see across the state line and into the Green Mountains of the State of Vermont. Here there is a stunning photograph of the mountain range, a shot taken from this very spot. On the photo, the names of each mountain are annotated, so you can look across the vast wilderness and call these peaks by their names. Whenever I travel up north and into the great Adirondack Park, I must stop here and look east into these mountains. Perhaps I’ve stopped at this same overlook fifty times, maybe seventy-five. Since the times, decades ago, when I would bring my children for leaf-peeping rides or camping trips. Long before the photo plaque was installed.
    It is a beautiful place to pause, made all the more special by the history it holds within our family.
    Thanks for taking me along on your trek above Loch Beinn a’Mheadhoin, and for reminding me of my own such place, a place to pause, on this side of the pond.
